Grit and Legacy Youth Initiative ✦

What we do and who we are.

Grit & Legacy Youth Initiative is a non-profit organization that exists to shape young leaders through athletic training, academic support, and community engagement. Founded by a U.S. Army veteran, our mission is to provide low to no-cost programs that build discipline, character, and purpose in youth athletes. Through mentorship, service, and holistic development, we empower the next generation to lead with grit and leave a lasting legacy in their communities.

Meet the founder.

Alex Ortega is a Southern California native and U.S. Army veteran, born and raised in San Bernardino County. Growing up with tough circumstances and limited opportunities, his passion for sports kept him focused on the future. It’s that experience that drives our mission today: to provide opportunities to youth and families who are equally deserving.

With years of experience coaching youth athletes, Alex brings a disciplined, purpose-driven approach rooted in his military background. His goal is to help young athletes grow into leaders—both on and off the field—by fostering character, accountability, and a strong commitment to their communities.

The goal is to ensure that all kids, no matter their background, have the chance to pursue their potential through sports, academics and mentorship.

One mission. build.

1. ATHLETIC TRAINING

We provide structured, performance-based training designed to push youth athletes mentally and physically. Through drills, conditioning, and skill development, we help them build confidence, commitment, and a competitive mindset that translates into all areas of life.

2. ACADEMIC SUPPORT

We understand that success isn't just measured in wins and stats. Our academic mentorship program provides tutoring, homework support, and goal-setting tools to keep our athletes focused and driven in the classroom. We emphasize accountability and teach the value of showing up in everyday of life.

3. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Leadership means serving others. Our youth are given real opportunities to make an impact in their neighborhoods through volunteer work, service projects, and events that challenge them to step up and give back. We help them understand that their legacy starts now—with every choice they make and every life they touch.

We believe in the power of community to create lasting change, and we would love for you to join us in our mission! Whether you're interested in volunteering your time, making a donation, or exploring other ways to support our cause, every bit helps in making a significant impact.
